Journey's Journal

News from one of our newest "members." Can you guess the identities of "Mom" and "Pop?"

Today was a big day. I should have known it was going to be special. Pop has had a cage full of Quail here all week. Traveler and me have spent hours checking on those birds. I like the way they smell.

We got up early this morning and only had a very light breakfast. We all loaded up in the truck an headed out as the sun was coming up. I thought it was a good time to get some extra sleep. When I woke up we were on a bumpy road. This always starts Traveler moaning and making a lot of noise. When he gets excited I always do to. I guess it's a bonding thing. When we stopped we were at Miss Vicki’s field.

This is where it got interesting.

Pop got out and started pounding stakes into the ground. Mom put Roxy, Traveler, and me on short leads attached to the stakes. This was the first time I had ever been hooked up to a pole, but nobody else seemed to mind so I guess it was OK. This is when we started playing the new game. I like this game and think I can be very good at it but first let me tell you how it worked.

Pop got the crate with the Quail and started pulling out a couple at a time. He would go out and hide the Quail in the grass and bushes. He let Traveler loose and then Traveler would run around and when Traveler smelled the Quail he would stop and look at them. I could see all of this happening from where I was. After Traveler stopped, Pop would go over and kick around the grass until the Quail flew. Then he would shoot it. After Pop shot the Quail, Traveler would go and get the Quail and bring it back to Pop. They did this several times while Roxy and me watched. Pop came back and put Trav back on the lead and let Roxy loose. She played the same game. I thought it was going to be my turn next but they made it different for me.

Pop turned Trav and me loose together. He runs a lot faster and longer than I usually do, but, I played along and went with him. When he stopped I got to watch the game close up. Mom took me back a ways but it was cool to see Traveler go get the birds. It seems they were concerned about the gun shot bothering me but that was silly. We did this a few more times and they put Traveler up. It was going to be my turn at last.

When I found the first Quail it was in a metal box. I stopped and pointed but only for a few seconds, I wanted that bird. Mom made me walk away a few yards and Pop made the bird fly then he shot it. Mom turned me loose and I got my turn to go get the bird. After I brought the bird back Pop threw it in the air and fired the gun again. I still knew how to go get it. Remember, I like this game. We did it again but they didn't make me back up this time. I still did my part. Pop was real happy and instead of taking the bird he let me carry it back to the Truck. I got to show Roxy and Trav what I can do. I think Traveler was real happy but he made it seem like it was no big deal.

It seems we are going to get to play this game every couple of weeks or so. I think I can be good enough to go to a higher level. This should be fun.

FPGSPC "Haunt" Test Weekend

Our Club held its very first AKC sanctioned event - a Hunt Test at Little River Farm in Quincy. The weekend was a great success, with many entries receiving qualifying scores and a few finishing titles. We are grateful to all our hard-working judges, and we'd like to thank them: Jean Matmor (and her three horses, thank you Jean), Lisa Durham, and our own Jim Eustace and Todd Knouff. Without your combined knowledge and experience, we wouldn't make the kind of progress in training our dogs that we'd all like to see. Thank you for your time and generosity.

We'd also like to thank all the club members who made the weekend so much fun...providing food, keeping records, planting birds, setting up and decorating, filling water buckets, mowing, and all the little details that make these tests possible. Thanks also to those who entered their dogs and spent time with us this weekend! We even had two junior handlers running dogs, and we hope we're seeing the future of our sport!

It was a beautiful weekend -- the weather cooperated! We held a club meeting on Saturday night while we enjoyed Vern and Betsy Phillip's terrific "Oktoberfest" dinner. Look back here for meeting minutes. I'll also post them on Yahoo (when I get them done!) We welcomed two new members this weekend, Jimmy Daniels and Duke McRaa.

FPGSPC Yahoo Group

Okay. I'm at a loss for what to do with old(er) Club material, such as meeting minutes, by-laws, etc. My thought is that it might be best to create a Yahoo Group..."FPGSPC" where all such material can be stored. I can also post Premiums, the Membership Application, etc., for members and friends of the Club to download. List members can post photos and communicate directly to other members. There will be a one-time approval to join the list, and then you can post freely. Let's give it a try. I know that means that there are two FPGSPC web entities, but I think it may really cover the waterfront in terms of Club communications. I'll send current members (if I have your email address) an invitation to join. Pass on the information as you feel appropriate to anyone else who might be interested in joining the list. I don't think it should be limited to Club members only. What do you think?

October Hunt Test Premium

It is official! The FPGSPC has received approval from the AKC to hold licensed Hunting Tests and Field Trials. So, with no delay, we are doing so! Premiums for our first Hunt Test, to be held at Little River Farm on October 25th and 26th will be emailed to members ASAP. The closing date is October 21st, so act quickly.

Dear Board Members...

Except for Mike, who doesn't have email, I have tuned blogger to send each board member an email when something is posted to the site. I hope that meets with everyone's approval. I did it, not to pester y'all, but to encourage your feedback on the site. For instance, if I make a mistake or need more information, you can help!

If you would prefer not to receive a notification, or if you want me to send it to another email address, please let me know, and I'll make the necessary adjustments.

Thanks!

Please Send Material to Post!

Welcome! In addition to calendar events, photos, and club news, I'd like to post brags, member news and anything else you'd like to see here. This is a very flexible format, and there are no limitations as to what we can put here. Bookmark this location and check back often! I look forward to your feedback. Let me know what you think.

Meeting Minutes: September 6, 2008

There was no board meeting, but the minutes from the regular meeting are here. Please note election of new officers.

More From the Water Test Weekend

I know that there were members and friends of the FPGSPC who took pictures this weekend, but I don't have them yet. What I do have are a few pictures I took with my phone.

Here are Riley and Siri, ready to go. Sadly, Siri didn't qualify in NRD (despite 2 attempts), but both dogs had a blast swimming and fetching dummies from the lake. On the other hand, neither of my dogs would go anywhere near the snakes, so they didn't receive jolts from the shock collar that left some dogs really shaken up! For their own good, of course!

Also, Vern and Betsy brought their Hunter 26 -- launched it in the lake and spent the weekend (reasonably) comfortable. Traveller and Roxie were also aboard! This is a whole new twist on staying at Little River Farm -- and the only way I know to guarantee a level campsite!

FPGSPC Holds Meeting at Little River Farm

The membership of the FPGSPC met Saturday night, during the 2-day GSPCA-sanctioned water-test weekend at Little River Farm. In conjunction with the water testing, the Club held a Snake-Proofing Clinic conducted by Dr. Bud Calderwood, DVM.

The Club oversaw the snake-proofing of over 50 dogs, both members' GSPs and many others. The GSP-only water test saw all three levels tested on Saturday, RDX, RD, and NRD, and Sunday followed with the testing of RD and NRD dogs. There were many dogs qualified this weekend, including Jim Eustace's "Q" and Steve Gregor's "Cooper" who both earned their RDX ratings. Congratulations Jim and Steve, as well as our other qualifiers this weekend. A full list will be posted.

A picnic lunch was served at the Little River Farms cabin at the conclusion of the testing and snake clinic. A heavy downpour in the afternoon put an end to the day's fishing, but not to the Club's evening agenda, which began with a wonderful dinner prepared be Vern and Betsy Phillips (and company). In addition to raiding the fridge for leftovers, Vern grilled the day's take of quail.

The Club's meeting was held after dinner. Meeting minutes will be posted ASAP!

The proposed amendments to the by-laws are here.
